Quebec City, August 16, 2016– Village Monde, World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the Centre for International Study and Cooperation (CECI) are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement with the Uniterra program. Under this agreement, the three international organizations will join forces to develop responsible tourism projects that provide a sustainable source of revenue for remote communities around the world.
Village Monde,WUSC and CECI will draw upon their wealth of experience to support local economic development initiatives and to build the capacities of villages to welcome travellers seeking cultural immersion, a major trend in the international tourism market. The organizations will work on several joint actions to enhance tourism offerings, such as improving the existing tourism structures, providing professional training and creating an online client interface.
The Uniterra program, which already supports responsible tourism projects, is a valuable tool for exploring and evaluating destinations with potential to receive the support and label of Village Monde. With its strong experience in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia, Uniterra will lend its expertise to help Village Monde identify and structure a responsible village tourism offering that promotes sustainable economic development to benefit communities affected by poverty.
Ultimately, the fruit of this partnership will give travellers who share their values of responsible tourism the chance to visit more than 500 exceptional village destinations around the world that are supported by the Village Monde platform. Over the next five years, Village Monde aims to generate Can$4.5 million in revenue for communities looking to diversify their economy and create local jobs for youth and women. The organization has designed a technology-driven collaborative platform to promote its village destinations and, in fall 2016, will begin connecting host villages with travellers interested in solidarity tourism. The Uniterra program enables 600 volunteers each year to contribute to positive, lasting change for a more equitable world by dedicating a few weeks to two years of their lives to international volunteer work. The program also provides opportunities to get involved in Canada and play an active role in combatting poverty. Through this program, WUSC and CECI create cooperative relationships with Canadian partners to support the program objectives.
