Guatemala celebrates women entrepreneurs

March, 23 2012

To celebrate International Women’s Day, a Women Entrepreneur Fair was held on March 8 in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. The goal of the event was to recognize the role of women in the economy and bring awareness to their contributions to national development.

On March 8, 2012 the Economic Development Association of Huehuetango, ASDECOHUE, organized an Exhibition of Women Entrepreneurs in Guatemala. This long-time partner of CECI took the opportunity to discuss the role of women in the economy and offer the public the fruits of their labor.

Among other things, the Fair offered the public handicrafts made from pine leaves, textile products, delicious fried peanuts and sweet, exquisite mushrooms and high quality sausages, cheeses and spreads.

The Fair was an opportunity to reflect on progress made by women in economic terms, while celebrating their bravery and the role they now play in the decision making process.

In Guatemala, although much remains to be done to bring women out of poverty and discrimination, it is important to emphasize the extraordinary role played by women entrepreneurs towards improving women's rights. CECI was beside ASDECOHUE, with Isabel Barrios, Sector Program Manager to commemorate this day and acknowledge the contribution of women to the economic development of Guatemala.
